After the facts started to come out about the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February, there was utter disbelief how things evolved and cost the life of seventeen people.  It's really difficult to swallow all the mistakes made by so many people over a period of time.  There was a colossal system failure that led to the tragedy.  The school system, the local police and the FBI, all play a big part in this.  If one of these parties had intervened, nothing would have happened.

If ever there was a person, sending out red flags, black flags, etc, it was this shooter.  They say,"if you see something, say something".  The students and the public-at-large did, without getting results.  Two people contacted the FBI, local police went more than thirty times to his residence over complaints, the school expelled him and prohibited him from coming back on campus, but never referred his problems for some kind of treatment.  Seems like some "guidance" came down from Washington not to get troubled kids into the system, to avoid them problems in the future. One thing is lax policy, another is common sense.

A lot of money is being thrown at the problem, about 400 million here in Florida, to tighten up security and other measures.  The anti 2nd Amendment and gun-control zealots, made sure they pushed this issue and "toted" some students to town halls, rallies and gave them TV time to vent their anger in public, instead of giving them and their families time to grieve and get necessary counseling.  These kids were exploited while their wounds were still very fresh. The gun is the endpoint of all these tragedies, so it gets all the blame. This is a recent phenomenon probably the last 20-25 years while guns have been around for a long time. Something else in our culture has changed .

Sometime, after one of the earlier shootings, the federal government commissioned a panel to study the causes and effects of these actions.  I've heard one of the members of the panel on radio making very good points. As far as I know, none of these people have been invited to share their research and help conduct policy changes either in Tallahassee or Washington. One of the things hardly mentioned is the copy-cat effect of these actions, which was part of the study.

The shooter will get his due.  The main players in this systemic failure will all keep their jobs and go on without any consequences.  No accountability.

The gun used for the next shooting is already out there.

Today is May 22. Another shooting in Santa Fe, Texas with 10 dead.  New gun-control laws would not have avoided this recent massacre. It was done by a 17 year old who took his father's revolver and shotgun to do the shooting. Guess what, the guns were already out there and he used a trench coat when entering the school. copying the Columbine killers. That plus the fact that irresponsible kids have access to parents' guns and ammunition, like the Sandy Hook massacre, make this very upsetting.
